About Your Safety and Security

We live in an age of dishonesty and treachery, as well as one of great human sacrifice and compassion. Around every corner there are those who will give you the shirts off their backs or rob you of your last nickel. It's hard to know who to trust. When shopping online, you can take measures to protect yourself by doing a few simple things:

1. Make sure you enter your credit card or banking information ONLY on a secure page. On the page where you are asked for the payment information, check the bottom of your browser window to make sure the little lock icon shows a locked state. Check the address bar near the top of your browser window and make sure it starts with https (vs http). These two things indicate the server is using the latest and most secure means of gathering your credit card or banking information.
2. Use a credit card whenever possible. Debit cards don't typically afford you the liability limits that credit cards do, and you could lose all your money to a scammer.
3. Do business with people who have been certified by third party organizations, such as iCop or Trust-e. Remember that some unethical business people will steal the graphics from those sites and try to trick you into believing they are legit, so visit the certification organization's web site and do a member search for the merchant you want to do business with. (On iCop, I am listed here.)
4. Do a search on the domain name. I start with www.networksolutions.com and check their "whois" database. Make sure the organization has been around for at least a little while, and be wary of domains from third world nations, as their laws are not as strict as ours (and it'd be impossible to chase them down if they turn out to be scammers).
