Rescued Pets

As co-founder of a non-profit rescue organization, I am painfully aware of the special needs of rescued pets. Many have suffered malnutrition, received no veterinary care, were covered with parasites, or simply fed the cheapest, lowest quality pet food their previous owners could get. These pets are at a severe disadvantage with respect to their health. Feeding Flint River Ranch can help rescued pets recover their health very quickly.

Rescued Pets Have Special Needs

When a pet is removed from its previous home or found wandering the streets, he is more than likely the victim of someone who simply didn't care about him. Sometimes pets do get lost or stolen, but frequently pets that are unwanted are simply let go. People who don't care about their pets certainly don't buy a high quality pet food.

Depending on the pet's circumstances, he may have been pest-ridden, malnourished, injured, or contracted a disease for which no treatment was offered. Nutritional support is the key to solving many kinds of health problems.

Once a rescued pet's immediate needs are cared for, such as broken limbs, cuts, life-threatening illnesses, and parasites, it's important to start him off with a superior quality food that will not introduce more health problems now that he's in a safe, loving environment. Avoid foods that contain

  • by-products (such as chicken by-product meal)
  • harmful chemicals (such as propylene glycol and ethoxyquin)
  • generic fats or proteins (such as 'meat' or 'animal fat')
  • food fragments (such as brewer's rice)
  • ingredients designated as unfit for human consumption (such as meat and bone meal)
  • artificial colors or flavors

The best foods are oven-baked, not extruded, preserved with all-natural tocopherols, contain only USDA meats and human-quality grains and vegetables and never use by-products, artificial colors or flavors, or sweeteners.

The Whole Dog Journal states, "An important step in any dog's recovery is the right diet. Dogs are designed to eat a variety of fresh, whole foods." The February issue each year examines the best commercially available dog foods, and one brand that is rated top quality year after year is Flint River Ranch.
